According to the media reports, Renowned as a marketer, advertising guru, and once headed a popular music TV channel in India, Mr. Murthy had, in 2000, along with some partners ventured into funding early stage start-ups for various companies across different sectors. later on he set up his own venture called passion funds and become famous with the title of Startup guru.

The Mumbai police told the media that Mr. Murthy had been arrested in various charges including molestation and sexual harassment. Mr Murthy, who is Managing Partner of Seedfund, was picked up by police from his home in Bandra west. “On December 25 last year, the Delhi-based woman entrepreneur had filed a complaint against him with the National Commission for Women, stating that Mr Murthy, 52, allegedly made objectionable, derogatory and obscene gestures and sexual remarks while messaging her on WhatsApp.  

Later, Mr. Murthy had apologized for some of his messages, but the NCW adopted a tough stand, seeking appropriate legal action since this was the second complaint of a similar nature against him. It had subsequently forwarded the complaint to Mumbai police for necessary action. Four days, later Khar police station registered a case against him under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act and started investigations into the matter. The case was registered under sections 354 (D), 509 of IPC and under section 67 of Indian IT Act at Khar Police Station. Besides the complaint made by a Delhi-based woman, the commission had also highlighted a similar issue raised by another woman in 2017.

Meanwhile coming out in his own defense Mr. Murthy had twitted the following lines making his side clear in this alleged sexual harassment case. The reports published by the Hindustan Times Mahesh Murthy was on Friday granted anticipatory bail after being arrested on charges of sexually harassing a woman based in Delhi and using obscene language while communicating with her on WhatsApp. He was granted anticipatory bail last week by a sessions court, which had ordered Murthy be released on executing a surety of Rs15,000 in the event of an arrest.        

The move came after the National Commission for Women (NCW) wrote to the Khar police in December last year. Based on the NCW complaint, an FIR was registered on December 29 against Murthy, a resident of Bandra (West). Senior police inspector of Khar police station Ramchandra Jadhav said: “He was granted anticipatory bail in the case. It was a technical arrest.”                  

The woman approached the NCW last year with a written complaint alleging Murthy used objectionable, derogatory, obscene signs and sexual remarks against her on social media.

The NCW stated that they had received one more complaint from another woman last year alleging similar crimes against Murthy. Even as Murthy apologized for some of his posts, the NCW decided that action needs to be taken. “He has sent similar messages to few other women and we are in the process of questioning him,” added the official.
