Dr Ashwin Dhanraj Porwal, renowned proctologist and the founder surgeon of Healing Hands Clinic, Pune, has done what a lot of doctors have wanted to achieve all their lives. A pioneer in his field of medicine – Proctology – Dr Porwal innovated his own technique for treating complex fistula, known as Dr Ashwin Porwal’s Distal Laser Proximal Ligation (DLPL) technique that has provided relief to a huge number of patients who have been suffering from this dreadful condition.
An M.B.B.S. from the prestigious B.J. Medical College, Pune, Dr Porwal did a D.N.B in General Surgery from Poona Hospital and Research Centre. He also holds a Diploma in Proctology from Italy and Laparoscopy from France. Trained under the Father of Coloproctosurgery, Dr Antonio Longo of Italy, Dr Ashwin Porwal is considered an authority in the field of proctology surgeries.
Dr Porwal is well known for performing the S.T.A.R.R or Stapled Trans-Anal Rectal Resection Surgery for the first time in Maharashtra in November 2009. He is also known for achieving the rare feat of performing the most number of S.T.A.R.R surgeries per month in Asia for the treatment for chronic constipation. He is an expert at Stapler Haemorrhoidopexy, a surgical technique to treat advanced grades of haemorrhoids (piles). He is also the first surgeon in India to have performed the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Suspension or P.O.P.S. surgery for pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence in female patients. Dr Porwal revolutionized the treatment of anorectal disorders like piles, fistula, fissure and pilonidal sinus by introducing laser in India for treating these conditions.
In order to reach out to more and more patients, Dr Porwal started super-speciality proctology centre Healing Hands Clinic in Pune in 2008. In less than a decade’s time, the clinic has branches not just in Pune, but in Mumbai, Nasik and Jaipur, which speaks volumes of the vision of this exemplary man. Keen to pass on his surgical expertise and knowledge over to the newer generation of doctors, Dr Porwal started training programs for post-graduate students and practising surgeons. This unique organization is ISO certified and awarded ‘Centre of Excellence in Proctology’ by Dr Antonio Longo himself.
Most notably, Dr Ashwin Porwal won the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Excellence in Healthcare in 2015 on account of his contribution to the medical and health sector. He is also a recipient of JITO (Jain International Trade Organization) Young Entrepreneur Award in 2016 for his research, his organization, and the way he and Healing Hands have successfully grown over the last 9 years.
