With a global one-day record of over 90,000 new coronavirus positive cases added, India crossed the 4.2 million total confirmed cases. The country now has overtaken Brazil to be the second most infected country in the world.
India on Sunday recorded 90,802 new cases and 1,016 deaths. Maharashtra continues to the worst affected state in the country. It has nearly 25% of the country’s total cases. The state also reported a new one-day high of 23,350 new positive cases yesterday.
The United States of America continues to be the most affected country with over six million cases. Brazil now sits in third place globally, with 4.13 million cases.
India has been reporting record breaking number of new daily cases, as the coronavirus infection continues to dangerously spread at alarming rates, however the government has been adamant to open up the country, with unlock 4.0 currently being introduced this month.
India’s speed of infection spread is such that the country reported 10 lakh new cases within just 13 days, in comparison to 16 days for the previous 10 lakhs. India is Asia’s worst hit country due to the pandemic.
The country has been witnessing over 1000 daily deaths, as the total fatalities in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic has reached 70,626. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra account for nearly 52% of all Covid-19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
Despite its high number of cases, the country’s death toll is comparatively lower compared to other global countries, at just over 71,000. According to the ministry of health, the case fatality rate was down to 1.72% on Sunday.
About 8.82 lakh cases in the country are active cases, which amounts to 20.9% of the total cases, while the recovery rate stands at 77%.
The national capital region of New Delhi, which today opened up its metro rail services also has recorded a sudden surge with 2973 new cases. Experts have attributed increased number of cases to the reopening of the economy, along with ramped up testing capacities.
The country’s economy has been badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic, contracting nearly 24% in the first quarter of this year, its worst performance since records began in 1996.
Meanwhile, the ICMR has issued new guidelines for testing, which mandates Covid-19 testing on demand, with no prior need of prescription from a medical practitioner.
