Several visitors who had gone to catch the Euro Final took to Twitter to share the videos of the violence condemning England fans for being ‘sore losers.’ Even though people across the world were cheering for both the teams and celebrating Italy’s win after everything, a number of England fans did not take the loss in a happy and good spirit.
Videos from outside the Wembley stadium showed some of the English supporters physically/verbally attacking and racially abusing the Italian audience as well as spitting on and stomping the Italian national flag. Besides the Italians, even the England fans were discriminating against their own Black players who missed final penalty kicks for England.
They created mayhem outside the iconic Wembley Stadium on July 11 after Italy won the EURO 2020 final via penalties which came as a major disappointment to them. The English supporters reacted to Italy’s historic win at the European Championship in a 3-2 penalty shootout, after a 1-1 draw. Agitated by this loss, England supporters attacked the Italian fans outside the match stadium- a video of which is breaking the internet at this point.
It is the second time in history that Italy won the title since 1968 and remain undefeated for three years ever since their national team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, now finally they have become the European champions.
Unexpectedly, the England supporters have reportedly reacted miserably and disgracefully after their dream of a second title to add to the 1966 World Cup win was shattered on Sunday.
During the major penalty shootout, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jaden Sancho did fail to get the ball into the final goal post. Following Italy’s win, the trio was badly subjected to racial abuse and racism on social media.
Reacting to the unfortunate incident seen all around, England’s Football Association has condemned the racist abuse and urged the ‘toughest punishment possible for anyone responsible.’
“The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of our England players on social media,” the statement also said.
Apart from the Wembley violence, even England’s own players who missed penalty kicks in the game against Italy in the Euro 2020 final were subjected to extreme racial abuse online. After the Italy vs England match, English Football Association issued a strict statement condemning the language used against the players.
Notably, ugly scenes had already broken out in London way before the match when hundreds and thousands of fans even without tickets tried to enter the famous Wembley Stadium and attempted to battle with stewards and police to go past the lines of the stadium. Italy finally lifted the Euro 2020 title by edging England on penalties 3-2, 1-1 after extra time.
