In 1933, Irwin R. Buchalter started practicing law in Los Angeles. Mr. Buchalter joined California attorneys Jerry Nemer and Murray Fields in 1948 to serve the area’s growing post-war commercial community. As the business community continued to develop, the firm grew along with it, diversifying and expanding to meet new and increasing demands. In 1957, Buchalter merged with a leading business firm – Gitelson, Cooper, Coyle & Savitch – and added an intellectual property, labor and employment, real estate, and tax to better address the growing complexities of doing business in a global business community. Buchalter, Nemer, Fields & Younger was established in 1979 when former Los Angeles District attorney and Attorney General of California Evelle Younger joined the practice.  During the early 1980’s, the firm continued to expand and opened offices in San Francisco and Orange County, California. In 1991, 35 attorneys from Rosen, Wachtell & Gilbert joined the firm’s Los Angeles office.

In 2005, Buchalter acquired Arizona-based Anderson Brody Levinson & Weiser, strengthening its expertise in the financial services and real estate sector, and further deepening its already strong regional presence.

In 2010, attorneys from Ellman, Burke, Hoffman, and Johnson, with expertise handling land use and real estate, joined Buchalter’s San Francisco office. 2017 was a remarkable year for the firm as it announced it had expanded by opening two additional office locations in Sacramento and Seattle.  Currently, the firm has offices in Los Angeles, Napa Valley, Orange County, Sacramento, San Francisco, Scottsdale, and Seattle. Buchalter lawyers provide full-service representation to financial institutions, corporations and business entities regionally, nationally and internationally advising clients in over 30 diverse practice and industry groups.

Additionally, the lawyers employed with Buchalter are also actively involved in the communities where they live and work. Many serve on the boards of prominent organizations and associations, including the Public Law Center, San Francisco Legal Aid Society, Practicing Law Institute, California State Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the LACBA Domestic Violence Project, the Sojourner Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Phoenix, and many others.

Buchalter has been consistently ranked among leading law firms by Chambers USA, The Daily Journal, Los Angeles Business Journal, Best Lawyers, and other prominent publications. It was also ranked as a leader nationally by American Legal Media and National Law Journal.
